Ibn Mājah also recorded it (2/314) through the route of ʿAnbasah ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān from Muḥammad ibn Zādhān who said: Umm Saʿd narrated to me, saying: "The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) entered upon ʿĀʾishah while I was with her, and he said: Is there any food? She said: We have bread, dates, and vinegar. The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: What a good condiment vinegar is! O Allāh, bless the vinegar, for it was the condiment of the prophets before me, and a house with vinegar will never be poor." I said: This isnād is ruined; ʿAnbasah and Ibn Zādhān are both abandoned narrators, and the first was accused of fabrication by Abū Ḥātim. Then I found another route for Jābir's ḥadīth, but it is very weak. It is narrated by al-Ḥasan ibn Qutaybah: Mughīrah (who is Ibn Ziyād) narrated to us from Abū al-Zubayr from him with the wording: "No household will be impoverished with a condiment of vinegar, and the best of your vinegar is your wine vinegar." It was recorded by al-Bayhaqī (6/38) who said: "Abū ʿAbdullāh (meaning his teacher al-Ḥākim) said: This is a weak ḥadīth, and Mughīrah ibn Ziyād is known for strange narrations." I said: This Mughīrah is truthful but has errors as mentioned in "al-Taqrīb," so the defect is not from him but from his narrator al-Ḥasan ibn Qutaybah, for he is ruined as stated by al-Dhahabī, and al-Dāraqutnī said: "Abandoned in ḥadīth." And similar in weakness is what ʿUbaydullāh ibn al-Walīd added from ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUbayd ibn ʿUmayr who said: "A group of the Companions of the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) entered upon Jābir ibn ʿAbdullāh, and he brought them bread and vinegar, and said: Eat, for I heard the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) say: What a good condiment vinegar is! It is ruinous for a man when a group of his brothers enters upon him and he belittles what is in his house to present to them, and it is ruinous for the people to belittle what is presented to them." It was recorded by al-Bayhaqī (7/279-280) and Aḥmad (3/371). I said: And this ʿUbaydullāh is weak as affirmed by the ḥāfiẓ. It has also been narrated through two other routes from Jābir, but they are defective, and thus I included it in "al-Ḍaʿīfah" (5379)
