"If a stone were to be thrown into Hell, it would fall for seventy years before reaching its bottom." This was recorded by Abū Yaʿlá (4/1739), al-Bazzār (315), and Ibn Ḥibbān (2609) from Jarīr ibn ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd, from ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib, from Abū Bakr ibn Abī Mūsá al-Ashʿarī, from Abū Mūsá al-Ashʿarī as a marfūʿ ḥadīth. I said: This isnād consists of narrators who are all trustworthy, the men of the two Shaykhs [al-Bukhārī and Muslim], except for ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib, who is among the men of al-Bukhārī alone, and he had become confused. Despite this, al-Ḥāfiẓ said in "Zawāʾid al-Bazzār": "Its isnād is ḥasan!" As for al-Haythamī, he attributed it in "al-Majmaʿ" (10/389) to al-Bazzār and al-Ṭabarānī, excluding Abū Yaʿlá! Then he criticized it due to Muḥammad ibn Abān, who is not mentioned in their isnād! However, the ḥadīth has supporting narrations indicating that it has been preserved: The first is from Abū Hurayrah who said: "By the One in whose hand is the soul of Abū Hurayrah, the bottom of Hell is seventy years [deep]." Muslim recorded it in his "Ṣaḥīḥ" (1/130) and it is mawqūf but considered marfūʿ. It has been narrated from him as marfūʿ through the route of Abū Ḥāzim from him, who said: "We were with the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) when he heard a thud, and he said: Do you know what this is? We said: Allāh and His Messenger know best. He said: This is a stone that was thrown into the Fire seventy years ago, and it is now falling in the Fire until it reached its bottom." Muslim recorded it (8/150) and Aḥmad (2/371). Al-Ḥākim also recorded it (4/606) through the route of ʿUqbah ibn Abī al-Ḥasnāʾ from Abū Hurayrah as marfūʿ with the wording:
