it has a corroborating report from the ḥadīth of Jābir who said: "The Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) once entered the palm groves of the Banū al-Najjār and heard the voices of men from the Banū al-Najjār who had died in the pre-Islamic period being punished in their graves. The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) came out frightened and instructed his companions to seek refuge from the punishment of the grave." It was recorded by Aḥmad (3/295-296) with a sound, continuous chain according to the criteria of Muslim. Another corroborating report comes from the ḥadīth of Zayd ibn Thābit, elevated, which states: "This nation will be tested in their graves. If it were not for the fact that you would stop burying your dead, I would have asked Allāh to let you hear the punishment of the grave that I hear." Zayd said: Then he turned his face towards us and said: Seek refuge with Allāh from the punishment of the Fire. They said: We seek refuge with Allāh from the punishment of the Fire. He said: Seek refuge with Allāh from the punishment of the grave. They said: We seek refuge with Allāh from the punishment of the grave. He said: Seek refuge with Allāh from trials, both apparent and hidden. They said: We seek refuge with Allāh from trials, both apparent and hidden. He said: Seek refuge with Allāh from the trial of the Dajjāl. They said: We seek refuge with Allāh from the trial of the Dajjāl."

"This nation will be tested in their graves. If it were not for the fact that you would stop burying your dead, I would have asked Allāh to let you hear the punishment of the grave that I hear." He said: Seek refuge with Allāh from the punishment of the grave. They said: We seek refuge with Allāh from the punishment of the grave. He said: Seek refuge with Allāh from trials, both apparent and hidden. They said: We seek refuge with Allāh from trials, both apparent and hidden. He said: Seek refuge with Allāh from the trial of the Dajjāl. They said: We seek refuge with Allāh from the trial of the Dajjāl." It was recorded by Muslim (8/160-161) through the narration of Ibn ʿUlayyah who said: Saʿīd al-Jurayrī informed us from Abū Naḍrah from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī from Zayd ibn Thābit. Abū Saʿīd said: I did not witness it from the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) but Zayd ibn Thābit narrated it to me. He said: "While the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) was in a garden of the Banū al-Najjār on his mule, and we were with him, it suddenly swerved, nearly throwing him off. There were six, five, or four graves—al-Jurayrī was uncertain—and he said: Who knows the occupants of these graves? A man said: I do. He asked: When did these die? He said: They died in the state of polytheism. Then he mentioned it."
