"I said: O Messenger of Allāh! Should I record knowledge? He said: Yes. I said: And what is its recording? He said: Writing." It was narrated by al-Ḥākim and al-Khaṭīb in "al-Taqyīd" (p. 68), Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr, and ʿAbd al-Ghanī al-Maqdisī in "al-ʿIlm" (folio 29/1), and ʿAfīf al-Dīn in "Faḍl al-ʿIlm" (folio 125/2). Al-Ḥākim said: "ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Muʾammal is not reliable." Al-Dhahabī said in "al-Talkhīṣ": "Weak." Al-Ḥāfiẓ said: "Weak in ḥadīth." I say: More than one person has declared him trustworthy, and it seems that the weakening by those who weakened him is due to his memory, not due to any accusation against him personally. Al-Ḥāfiẓ concluded his biography by saying: "Abū ʿAbd Allāh (I think he means al-Dhahabī) said: He has poor memory, but we know of no flaw that would invalidate his integrity." I said: So if you understand that, then someone like him can be used as supporting evidence, and the ḥadīth can be elevated to the status of ṣaḥīḥ li-ghayrih, especially since permission for writing is established in more than one ḥadīth, and I may mention some of them soon, if Allāh wills. There is another chain from Ibn ʿAmr, narrated by Zayd ibn Yaḥyá al-Dimashqī, who informed us from ʿImrān ibn Mūsá from Makhūl from him in a marfūʿ form.
