It was recorded by Aḥmad (1/168) through the route of Fulayḥ from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, meaning Ibn Muʿammar, who said: ʿĀmir ibn Saʿd narrated to ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz—who was the governor of Medina—that Saʿd said: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: and he mentioned it. I said: This is a good chain of transmission for supporting evidence, and it also meets the criteria of the two Shaykhs, with some discussion regarding Fulayḥ, who is Ibn Sulaymān al-Madanī. Al-Ḥāfiẓ said: "He is truthful but makes many mistakes." He was followed by Sulaymān ibn Bilāl from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān with it. However, he did not mention: "on an empty stomach," nor eating in the evening, and he said: "poison" instead of: "thing." It was recorded by Muslim (6/123). Then it was recorded through the route of Hāshim ibn Hāshim who said: I heard ʿĀmir ibn Saʿd with it in a summarized form and he said: "poison and no magic."
