It was recorded by al-Nasāʾī (1/300) and Aḥmad (4/311-312 and 5/411) through various chains from ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib from ʿArfajah who said: "I was in a house with ʿUtbah ibn Farqad, and I wanted to narrate a ḥadīth, but there was a man from the Companions of the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) who seemed more entitled to narrate the ḥadīth than I was, so the man narrated from the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) saying: in Ramadan," and he mentioned it. I said: This isnād is good, for although ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib became confused, those who narrated from him, such as Shuʿbah, did so before his confusion, and likewise Sufyān al-Thawrī, who also narrated it from him according to al-Nasāʾī, but he made it from the Musnad of ʿUtbah ibn Farqad, and al-Nasāʾī said it was an error. ʿArfajah is Ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Thaqafī, and he was also narrated from by Manṣūr ibn al-Muʿtamir and others, and Ibn Ḥibbān mentioned him in "al-Thiqāt," and al-ʿAjlī said: "A trustworthy Kūfan tābiʿī." The ḥadīth was cited by al-Suyūṭī from the narration of Aḥmad and al-Bayhaqī in "al-Shuʿab" with the wording: "Ramadan is a blessed month, in which...." It appears that this is the wording of al-Bayhaqī, as those we mentioned do not have "a blessed month." This addition has been narrated through another chain from Aḥmad (2/425), al-Nasāʾī, and others from the route of Abū Qilābah from Abū Hurayrah as marfūʿ, and its narrators are trustworthy, but it is disconnected as clarified by al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Mundhirī (2/69). He also has (2/67) a supporting narration from the ḥadīth of Salmān (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu). It was narrated by Ibn Khuzaymah with a weak chain, and another (2/69) from the ḥadīth of ʿUbādah ibn al-Ṣāmit, narrated by al-Ṭabarānī with a chain containing someone unknown.
