quarreling with men," meaning arguing and disputing with them. It is said: "I quarreled with the man, I reproached and blamed him. I disputed with him, quarreling and arguing with him."

"There will be leaders whose words will not be refuted; they will plunge into the fire, following each other." This was recorded by Abū Yaʿlá in "his Musnad" (4/1779) through the route of Hishām ibn Saʿd from Ibn ʿUqbah from Muʿāwiyah ibn Abī Sufyān who said: I heard the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), and he mentioned it. I said: This isnād is good except that I do not know Ibn ʿUqbah. However, he has been followed up, as Abū Yaʿlá also recorded it (4/1781) through the route of Ḍimām ibn Ismāʿīl al-Maʿāfirī from Abū (Qabīl) who said: "Muʿāwiyah delivered a sermon to us on a Friday, saying: 'The wealth is ours and the spoils are ours; we give to whom we wish and withhold from whom we wish.' No one refuted him. On the second Friday, he said the same thing, and no one refuted him. On the third Friday, he said the same thing, and a man from those present in the mosque stood up and said: 'No, rather the wealth is ours and the spoils are ours. Whoever prevents us from it, we will judge him with our swords.' After the prayer, he ordered the man to be brought to him, seated him with him on the couch, then permitted the people to enter. He then said: 'O people, I spoke on the first Friday, and no one refuted me, and on the second, no one refuted me. When it was the third, this man revived me, may Allāh revive him. I heard the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) say: "There will come a people who speak, and they will not be refuted; they will plunge into the fire like monkeys." I feared that Allāh would make me one of them, so when this man refuted me, he revived me, may Allāh revive him, and I hoped that Allāh would not make me one of them.'" Al-Ṭabarānī recorded the elevated part of it in "al-Awsaṭ" (no. 5444), and the addition is his, saying: "No one narrated it from Abū Qabīl except Ḍimām."
