but he was not the only one to narrate it, as Faṭr ibn Khalīfah also reported from Abū al-Ṭufayl, who said: "ʿAlī (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu) gathered the people in al-Raḥbah and then said to them: 'I implore every Muslim who heard the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) say on the day of Ghadīr Khumm what he heard to stand up.' So thirty people stood up (in another narration: many people stood up) and testified that when he took his hand, he said to the people: 'Do you know that I am more entitled to the believers than they are to themselves?' They said: 'Yes, O Messenger of Allāh.' He said: 'Whomever I am his master, this ʿAlī is his master. O Allāh, befriend those who befriend him and oppose those who oppose him.'" He said: I left, and there was something in my heart, so I met Zayd ibn Arqam and said to him: I heard ʿAlī say such and such. He said: What do you find strange? I heard the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) say that to him." It was recorded by Aḥmad (4/370), Ibn Ḥibbān in "Ṣaḥīḥ" (2205 - Mawārid al-Ẓamʾān), Ibn Abī ʿĀṣim (1367 and 1368), al-Ṭabarānī (4968), and al-Ḍiyāʾ in "al-Mukhtārah" (no. 527 according to my verification). I said: Its isnād is authentic according to the criteria of al-Bukhārī. Al-Haythamī said in "al-Majmaʿ" (9/104): "Aḥmad narrated it, and its narrators are those of the authentic collections, except for Faṭr ibn Khalīfah, who is trustworthy." He was also followed by Salamah ibn Kuhayl, who said: I heard Abū al-Ṭufayl narrate from Abū Surayḥah or Zayd ibn Arqam—Shuʿbah was uncertain—about the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) in a summarized form: 'Whomever I am his master, ʿAlī is his master.' It was recorded by al-Tirmidhī (2/298) and he said: "A ḥadīth that is ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ."
