"by Allāh, I wish I were a tree that is cut down." Al-Ḥākim said: "This ḥadīth has a sound isnād, but they did not include it." Al-Dhahabī remained silent about it. Al-Tirmidhī narrated it from this perspective (2/51) and Ibn Mājah (4190) without the recitation of the verse, and Al-Tirmidhī said: "This is a ḥasan gharīb ḥadīth, and it is also narrated from another perspective that Abū Dharr said: I wish I were a tree that is cut down." I said: This is how Aḥmad narrated it (5/173), explicitly stating that his saying: "by Allāh, I wish..." is from the words of Abū Dharr, and its isnād to Ibrāhīm is sound. This indicates that those who considered it part of the ḥadīth, as in the narrations of Al-Ḥākim, Al-Tirmidhī, and Ibn Mājah, are mistaken and have inserted it into the ḥadīth. Moreover, the isnād of the ḥadīth has weakness due to Ibrāhīm ibn Muhājir, as Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar said about him in "Al-Taqrīb": "truthful but weak in memory." Al-Mundhirī mentioned the ḥadīth in "Al-Targhīb" with the wording of Al-Ḥākim, saying: "Al-Bukhārī narrated it in a summarized form, and Al-Tirmidhī, except that he said: 'There is not a space of four fingers in it,' and Al-Ḥākim, and the wording is his, and he said: sound isnād." I said: attributing it to Al-Bukhārī in a summarized form is incorrect, for Al-Bukhārī did not narrate it from Abū Dharr at all, but rather he narrated it in a very summarized form (4/237) from the ḥadīth of Abū Hurayrah and Anas with the wording: "If you knew what I know, you would laugh little and weep much."
