"if he thinks well of me, it is for him, and if he thinks ill of me, it is for him." This isnād is authentic; its men are trustworthy and mentioned in "al-Tahdhīb" except for Ḥayyān Abū al-Naḍr, who was deemed trustworthy by Ibn Maʿīn, and Ibn Abī Ḥātim said about him (1/2/245) from his father: "Righteous." Ibn Ḥibbān mentioned him in "al-Thiqāt" (3/48). Muḥammad ibn al-Muhājir is the trustworthy Anṣārī from Syria, not Muḥammad ibn Muhājir the weak Qurashī from Kūfah. The ḥadīth was also narrated by Ibn al-Mubārak in "al-Zuhd" (909), and from him by al-Dārimī (2/305), Aḥmad (3/491 and 4/106), Ibn Ḥibbān as well (717-718, 2393, and 2468), and al-Dūlābī in "al-Kuná" (2/137-138), and al-Ḥākim (4/240) through the route of Hishām ibn al-Ghāz from Ḥayyān Abū al-Naḍr with it, except that he said: "Let him think of me as he wishes." Al-Ḥākim said: "Authentic isnād." Al-Dhahabī agreed with him in "Talkhīṣ," but it appeared as "Ṣaḥīḥ (M)," which is a mistake by the scribe or printer. There is a corroborating narration from Abū Hurayrah with a similar wording to that of Ibn al-Muhājir. It was narrated by Aḥmad (2/391) and Ibn Ḥibbān (2394), and its isnād is authentic.
