"Whoever ends his life by feeding a needy person, seeking reward from Allāh, will enter Paradise. Whoever ends his life by fasting a day, seeking reward from Allāh, will enter Paradise. Whoever ends his life by saying 'There is no deity but Allāh,' seeking reward from Allāh, will enter Paradise." This was narrated by Ibn Shāhīn in the fifth part of "al-Afrād," al-Mukhliṣ in "al-Fawāʾid al-Muntaqāh" (23/2), and Abū Nuʿaym in "Akhbār Aṣbahān" (1/218-219) from Hishām ibn al-Qāsim, the brother of Rūḥ ibn al-Qāsim, who said: I heard Nuʿaym ibn Abī Hind narrating from Ḥudhayfah who said: I entered upon the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) during his illness, and I saw him trying to sit up while ʿAlī (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu) was with him, swaying from drowsiness. I said: O Messenger of Allāh, it seems ʿAlī has stayed up with you this night. Should I not come closer to you? He said: ʿAlī is more entitled to that than you. So ʿAlī came closer to him and supported him, and I heard him say: and he mentioned it. Ibn Shāhīn said: "This is a strange ḥadīth, and I do not know any other ḥadīth from Hishām ibn al-Qāsim." I said: He is among the unknowns, for they did not mention him. Except for Ibn Ḥibbān, who included him in "al-Thiqāt" (2/294 of the al-Ẓāhiriyyah manuscript) and mentioned this ḥadīth for him without adding more. I have found a corroborator for him, narrated by Ibn Bishrān in "al-Amālī" (134/1) through the route of al-Ḥasan ibn Abī Jaʿfar from Muḥammad ibn Juhādah from Nuʿaym ibn Abī Hind with a shortened version, and its wording is: "I entered upon the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) on the day he passed away, and he said to me: 'O Ḥudhayfah, whoever's life ends at death with the testimony that there is no deity but Allāh, sincerely, will enter Paradise.' I said: O Messenger of Allāh, should I keep this secret or announce it? He said: Rather, announce it. He said: This was the last thing I heard from the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam)."
