"Indeed, charity is not permissible for us, and the allies of the people are from themselves." It was recorded by Abū Dāwūd (1/262), al-Nasāʾī (1/366), al-Tirmidhī (1/128), al-Ḥākim (1/404), and Aḥmad (6/10 and 390) through various chains from Shuʿbah, who narrated to us from al-Ḥakam, from Ibn Abī Rāfiʿ, from Abū Rāfiʿ (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu) that the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) sent a man from Banī Makhzūm for charity, and he said to Abū Rāfiʿ: Accompany me so that you may receive from it. He replied: Not until I go to the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) and ask him. So he went to the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) and asked him, and he mentioned it. Al-Tirmidhī said: "A good, authentic ḥadīth." Al-Ḥākim said: "Authentic according to the criteria of al-Bukhārī and Muslim." Al-Dhahabī agreed with him, and it is as they said. Ibn Abī Laylā also followed him from al-Ḥakam ibn ʿUtaybah. It was recorded by al-Ṭaḥāwī (1/299) and also by Aḥmad (6/8), and the wording of Abū Dāwūd presents the other sentence before the first as will be mentioned. The second sentence was recorded by al-Bukhārī (4/290) from the ḥadīth of Anas as marfūʿ. It has many supporting narrations, including from Maymūn or Mihrān as marfūʿ with the wording: "We are a household prohibited from charity, and our allies are from ourselves, and we do not consume charity." It was recorded by Aḥmad (4/34-35). Al-Suyūṭī attributed it in "al-Jāmiʿ" to al-Ṭabarānī's "al-Awsaṭ" from Ibn ʿUmar with the wording:
