in the passive form, similar to the statements of other Companions, "We were commanded" and "We were forbidden," and all of this is considered as marfūʿ [attributed to the Prophet] as established in "Muṣṭalaḥ al-Ḥadīth." It has a corroborating report from the ḥadīth of Abū Hurayrah, who said: We were with the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) when he heard a thud. The Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said, "Do you know what this is?" He said: We replied, "Allāh and His Messenger know best." He said, "This is a stone that was thrown into the Fire seventy years ago, and it has been falling in the Fire until it reached its bottom now." It was recorded by Muslim (8/150) and also recorded elsewhere (1/130) in a shortened, mawqūf [stopped] form. It was narrated by Ibn Abī al-Dunyā in "Ṣifat al-Nār" (vol. 2, p. 1) in a marfūʿ form, and by al-Ḥākim (4/606) through another chain from him in a shortened marfūʿ form. Al-Dhahabī said, "Its chain is sound." Then al-Ḥākim recorded it (4/597) through the route of Abū Salamah ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān and Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib, who said: Abū Hurayrah narrated it in a marfūʿ form with the wording: "By the One in whose hand is Muḥammad's soul, the distance between the edge of the Fire and its bottom is such that a rock weighing seven she-camels with their fat, meat, and offspring would fall between the edge of the Fire and its bottom for seventy years." He said, "The isnād is authentic." Al-Dhahabī agreed with him. It has two other corroborating reports from the ḥadīth of Abū Mūsá and Buraydah in a similar marfūʿ form. Al-Bazzār recorded them in "Musnad" (p. 315 - its additions) and said about the first of them:
للمجهول مثل قول غيره من الصحابة " أمرنا " و " نهينا " وذلك كله في حكم المرفوع كما هو مقرر في " مصطلح الحديث ". وله شاهد من حديث أبي هريرة قال: كنا مع رسول الله ﷺ إذ سمع وجبة، فقال النبي ﷺ: " تدرون ما هذا؟ ". قال: قلنا: الله ورسوله أعلم، قال: " هذا حجر رمي به في النار منذ سبعين خريفا، فهو يهوي في النار الآن حتى انتهى إلى قعرها ". أخرجه مسلم (٨ / ١٥٠) وأخرجه في مكان آخر (١ / ١٣٠) مختصرا موقوفا. ورواه ابن أبي الدنيا في " صفة النار " (ق ٢ / ١) مرفوعا به، والحاكم (٤/ ٦٠٦) من طريق أخرى عنه مرفوعا مختصرا. وقال الذهبي: " سنده صالح ". ثم أخرجه الحاكم (٤ / ٥٩٧) من طريق أبي سلمة بن عبد الرحمن وسعيد بن المسيب قالا: قال أبو هريرة مرفوعا بلفظ: " والذي نفس محمد بيده إن قدر ما بين شفير النار وقعرها لصخرة زنتها سبع خلفات بشحومهن ولحومهن وأولادهن تهوي فيما بين شفير النار وقعرها سبعين خريفا ". وقال: " صحيح الإسناد ". ووافقه الذهبي. وله شاهدان آخران من حديث أبي موسى وبريدة مرفوعا نحوه. أخرجهما البزار في " مسنده " (ص ٣١٥ - زوائده) وقال في الأول منهما:
