and it was authenticated by Ibn Ḥibbān (181 and 182) and Ibn al-Jārūd in "al-Muntaqá" (86). See "Ṣaḥīḥ Abī Dāwūd" (145).

- "Control your hand, and in another narration: Do not extend your hand except for good." It was recorded by al-Bukhārī in "al-Tārīkh" (1/1/444) and al-Ṭabarānī in "al-Kabīr" (no. 818) through the route of Ṣadaqah ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Dimashqī from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAlī from Sulaymān ibn Ḥabīb who informed me: Aswad ibn Aṣram al-Muhāribī said: "I said: O Messenger of Allāh, advise me. He said:" and he mentioned it. Al-Bukhārī said: "There is a consideration in its isnād." I say: The reason is that this Ṣadaqah, who is Abū Muʿāwiyah al-Samīn, is weak. However, he was not alone in narrating it, for al-Ṭabarānī also recorded it (817) through two routes from Abū al-Maʿāfā Muḥammad ibn Wahb ibn Abī Karīmah al-Ḥarrānī who informed us: Muḥammad ibn Salamah from Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥīm from ʿAbd al-Wahhāb ibn Bakht from Sulaymān ibn Ḥabīb al-Muhāribī from Aswad ibn Aṣram al-Muhāribī: "that he brought his fat camels to Medina during a time of drought and barren land. When the people of Medina saw them, they were amazed at their fatness. This was mentioned to the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), and the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) sent for them. He came to them, looked at them, and said: Why did you bring these camels? He said: I intended to exchange them for a servant. The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: Who has a servant? ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu) said: I have one, O Messenger of Allāh. He said: Bring it, so ʿUthmān brought it. When Aswad saw it, he said: I want one like it. He said: It is yours, take it. So Aswad took it, and the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) took his camels. Aswad said: O Messenger of Allāh, advise me. He said: Can you control your tongue? He said: What can I control if I do not control it? He said: Can you control your hand? He said: What can I control if I do not control my hand? He said: "Then do not speak with your tongue except what is good and do not extend your hand except for good."
