Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAyyāsh from Ibn Ḥurmalah, meaning ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, from Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib from Abū Hurayrah who said: "The Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) passed by a group of people shooting and said..." and he mentioned it. I said: This isnād has trustworthy men, except that Ibn ʿAyyāsh has been weakened in his narrations from the people of Ḥijāz, and this is one of them, as ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Ḥurmalah is a Madinan and is truthful but sometimes errs. However, the ḥadīth is authentic, as it has another route narrated by Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr from Abū Salamah from Abū Hurayrah who said: "The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) went out while the tribe of Aslam was shooting and said: (and he mentioned it) 'Shoot, and I am with Ibn al-Adraʿ.' So the people held back their bows and said: 'Whoever you are with will win.' He said: 'Shoot, and I am with all of you.'" It was recorded by Ibn Ḥibbān (1646) and al-Ḥākim (2/94) who said: "Authentic according to the criteria of Muslim!" and al-Dhahabī agreed! It has a corroborating narration from Ziyād ibn al-Ḥuṣayn from Abū al-ʿĀliyah from Ibn ʿAbbās (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu) who said: "The Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) passed by a group shooting and said: 'Shoot, O sons of Ismāʿīl...'" It was recorded by Ibn Mājah (2/189) and Aḥmad (1/364) and al-Ḥākim who said: "Authentic according to the criteria of Muslim." Al-Dhahabī agreed, and it is as he said: It has another corroborating narration in al-Bukhārī in "al-Jihād" and Aḥmad in "al-Musnad" (4/50) from the route of Yazīd ibn Abī ʿUbayd who said: Salamah ibn al-Akwaʿ told me: "The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) went out to a group from the tribe of Aslam..." the ḥadīth. Al-Ḥākim recorded it from another route from Salamah with an addition. "He said: They shot for most of that day, then dispersed equally, none outdoing the other.
