he said this, and a group narrated from him, including Isrāʾīl and Aḥmad ibn Bashīr al-Kūfī. Abū Ḥātim said: His ḥadīth is weak, his ḥadīth is like that of the shaykhs. Ibn Ḥibbān mentioned him and said: He makes many mistakes. Al-Ḥāfiẓ said in "al-Taqrīb": "Truthful but makes mistakes."
"Whoever withholds the surplus of his water or pasture, Allāh will withhold His bounty from him on the Day of Resurrection." Aḥmad recorded it (2/179 and 221) through the route of Layth ibn Abī Sulaym, who is weak. However, he was not alone in narrating it. It was also recorded (2/183) through the route of Muḥammad ibn Rāshid from Sulaymān ibn Mūsá that ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr wrote to his worker on his land not to withhold the surplus of his water, for he heard the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) say it, and he mentioned it similarly. This isnād is good except that it is disconnected between Sulaymān and Ibn ʿAmr, but the ḥadīth, with both routes combined, is good. I found a supporting narration from Abū Hurayrah, raised to the Prophet, with the wording: "Whoever withholds the surplus of his water in this world, Allāh will withhold His bounty from him on the Day of Resurrection, and He will say: Today I withhold My bounty as you withheld what your hands did not make." It was recorded by Abū al-Shaykh in "al-Ṭabaqāt" (folio 63/1-2) from al-Ḥasan ibn Abī Jaʿfar from ʿAmr ibn Dīnār from Abū Ṣāliḥ from him. Al-Ḥasan, al-Ḥāfiẓ said in "al-Taqrīb": "Weak in ḥadīth despite his piety and virtue." I say: Such a person can be used as supporting evidence, so the ḥadīth is authentic, if Allāh wills.
