and it has been reported from Jābir similar to what we mentioned from Ibn Maslamah, as will be explained. What we have summarized regarding the ḥadīth is the opinion of most scholars. In "Fatḥ al-Bārī" (9/157), it is stated: "The majority said: It is permissible to look at her if he intends to marry her without her permission. There is a narration from Mālik that requires her permission. Al-Ṭaḥāwī reported from a group that it is not permissible to look at the betrothed before the contract under any circumstances, because she is considered a stranger, and they were refuted by the aforementioned ḥadīths." Benefit: ʿAbd al-Razzāq narrated in "al-Amālī" (2/46/1) with a sound chain from Ibn Ṭāwūs who said: I wanted to marry a woman, so my father said to me: Go and look at her. So I went, washed my head, combed my hair, and wore my best clothes. When he saw me in that state, he said: Do not go! I said: It is permissible for him to look at more than the face and hands due to the generality of the aforementioned ḥadīths and the saying of the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam): "If one of you proposes to a woman, and he is able to look at what will encourage him to marry her, then let him do so."
