"Beware of exaggeration in religion, for those before you were destroyed by exaggeration in religion." Narrated by al-Nasāʾī (2/49), Ibn Mājah (2/242), Ibn Khuzaymah (1/282/2), Ibn Ḥibbān (1011), al-Ḥākim (1/466), al-Bayhaqī (5/127), Aḥmad (1/215 and 347), and al-Ḍiyāʾ in "al-Mukhtārah" (59/200/2) from ʿAwf ibn Abī Jamīlah who said: Ziyād ibn Ḥuṣayn narrated to me from Abū al-ʿĀliyah from Ibn ʿAbbās who said: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said to me on the morning of al-ʿAqabah while he was standing on his mount: "Bring me pebbles." So I picked up for him small stones, the size of pebbles for throwing, and he placed them in his hand and said: "Like these," twice, and he gestured with his hand. Yaḥyá, one of the narrators, indicated that he raised it and said: "He mentioned it." Al-Ḥākim said: "Authentic according to the criteria of al-Bukhārī and Muslim." Al-Dhahabī agreed with him, but it is not so, for Ziyād ibn Ḥuṣayn was not narrated by al-Bukhārī in his Ṣaḥīḥ, so it is according to the criteria of Muslim only, and it was also authenticated by al-Nawawī in "al-Majmūʿ" (8/171) and Ibn Taymiyyah in "al-Iqtiḍāʾ" (p. 51).

"Beware of excessive praise, for it is slaughter." Narrated by Ibn Mājah (2/407) through Saʿd ibn Ibrāhīm ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf from Maʿbad al-Juhanī from Muʿāwiyah as marfūʿ. In "al-Zawāʾid": Its chain is good because Maʿbad al-Juhanī is disputed, and the rest of the narrators in the chain are trustworthy. I said: It is as he said. In "Fayḍ al-Qadīr": "It was also narrated by Aḥmad, Ibn Manīʿ, al-Ḥārith, and al-Daylamī." I said: It is a part of the ḥadīth "Whomever Allāh intends good for." The discussion on it has passed there (1196).
