to it earlier, but in its isnād is Shahr ibn Ḥawshab, who is weak. It is narrated with the wording: "unless he dyes it or plucks it," with this uncertainty. Perhaps the original ḥadīth is "unless he plucks it," and the uncertainty arose from the narrator. And Allāh knows best.
"Let your beards grow and trim your mustaches (and differ from the People of the Book)." It was recorded by Aḥmad (5/264) and al-Bayhaqī in "al-Shuʿab" (2/259/2) through the route of ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-ʿAlāʾ ibn Zabr, who said: I heard al-Qāsim, the freed slave of Yazīd, narrate from Abū Umāmah, who said: "The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) came out to a group of the Anṣār with white beards and said: O group of Anṣār, dye your beards red and yellow and differ from the People of the Book. They said: O Messenger of Allāh, the People of the Book trim their beards and let their mustaches grow. The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said (and he mentioned it). They said: O Messenger of Allāh, the People of the Book lighten their clothing and do not wear shoes. He said: Wear shoes and lighten your clothing and differ from the People of the Book." The addition is from Aḥmad. I say: This isnād is good. Al-Haythamī said (5/131): "It was narrated by Aḥmad and al-Ṭabarānī, and the men of Aḥmad are the men of the authentic collections, except for al-Qāsim, who is trustworthy, and there is some discussion about him that does not harm [the narration]." (ʿuthānīnakum) is the plural of (ʿuthnūn), which means beard. And (sibālakum) is the plural of (siblah) with movement: mustache.
"It is not permissible for a Muslim to shun another Muslim for more than three days, for they are both deviating from the truth as long as they continue in their sin. The one who initiates reconciliation first, his act of reconciliation is an expiation. If he greets the other and the greeting is not returned, the angels return it to him, and the devil returns it to the other. If they die in their estrangement, they will never be together in Paradise." It was recorded by al-Bukhārī in "al-Adab al-Mufrad" (no. 402), Aḥmad (4/20), and al-Bayhaqī in "al-Shuʿab" (2/287/2) from Yazīd al-Rashk, who said: I heard Muʿādhah al-ʿAdawiyyah say: I heard Shām ibn ʿĀmir say: I heard the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) say: and he mentioned it. I say: This isnād is authentic.
