It was recorded by Aḥmad (4/152) in "Musnad ʿUqbah ibn ʿĀmir al-Juhanī," and it seems that he indicated by this that Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Juhanī, the narrator of this ḥadīth, is this ʿUqbah. There have been various statements regarding his kunyah, so this should be added to them. I said: This is a good isnād, in which Ibn Isḥāq explicitly stated the narration.
"He prohibited gold rings and iron rings." It was recorded by al-Bayhaqī in "Shuʿab al-Īmān" (2/251/1) from Muḥammad ibn ʿAjlān, from ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb, from his father, from his grandfather, from the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam). It was also recorded by al-Bukhārī in "al-Adab al-Mufrad" and by Aḥmad in a similar manner. I said: This is a good isnād, and the ḥadīth is authentic, as it has another chain from Ibn ʿAmr and supporting evidence which I have detailed in "Ādāb al-Zafāf" (pp. 127 and 128 - third edition).
"Gray hair is the light of the believer; no man grows a gray hair in Islam except that it will be for him a good deed and will raise him a degree." It was recorded by al-Bayhaqī in "al-Shuʿab" (2/257/1) from al-Walīd ibn Kathīr, who said: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Ḥārith narrated to me from ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb, from his father, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr, who said: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: and he mentioned it. I said: This is a good isnād, ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb from his father from his grandfather ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr is established as a good ḥadīth. And ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Ḥārith, who is Abū al-Ḥārith al-Madanī, was said by al-Ḥāfiẓ: "Truthful but has errors." And al-Walīd ibn Kathīr is Abū Muḥammad al-Madanī, truthful and relied upon by the two Shaykhs. And the ḥadīth has a supporting narration from Abū Hurayrah, raised with the wording: "Do not pluck gray hair, for it is light on the Day of Resurrection, whoever grows a gray hair..." The ḥadīth is similar. It was recorded by Ibn Ḥibbān (1479) with a good isnād.
