he said: the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) ... then he narrated it through the route of Umayyah ibn Khālid: Sulaymān ibn al-Mughīrah narrated to us from Thābit from ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb from his father from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr with a similar narration. And he said: "Authentic according to the conditions of Muslim." And al-Dhahabī agreed with him. I said: Shuʿayb is not among the narrators of Muslim, so the ḥadīth is only authentic, and likewise ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb, but I think that his mention in this isnād is an error, for Ḥammād ibn Salamah narrated from Thābit similarly to the narration of Shaybān from Sulaymān, not mentioning ʿAmr, except that Ḥammād said: from Thābit from Shuʿayb ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr from his father, who said: "The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) was never seen eating while reclining, nor did two men ever walk behind him." It was recorded by Abū Dāwūd (3770), Ibn Mājah (244), and Aḥmad (2/165 and 167). The apparent context of this isnād suggests that the ḥadīth is mursal because Abū Shuʿayb is Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr as Shaybān explicitly stated in his narration—and he had no companionship. Therefore, al-Mundhirī said in "Mukhtaṣar al-Sunan" (5/302): "And this Shuʿayb is the father of ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb, and it appears here and in the book of Ibn Mājah: Shuʿayb ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr from his father. And he is Shuʿayb ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr. If Thābit al-Banānī attributed him to his grandfather when narrating from him, that is permissible. If he intended by 'his father' Muḥammad, then the ḥadīth is mursal, for Muḥammad had no companionship. If he intended by 'his father' his grandfather ʿAbd Allāh, then it is musnad, and Shuʿayb did hear from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr." I said: The more likely opinion to me is the second one, which is that he intended by 'his father' his grandfather ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr, due to the narration of Sulaymān ibn al-Mughīrah explicitly stating that the ḥadīth is from his musnad. This is supported by a narration of Aḥmad with the wording: "I never saw the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) eating ...". This is explicit regarding what we mentioned, and Allāh is the grantor of success.
