"jaʿfar ibn Abī Ṭālib passed by me last night in the company of angels, having two wings stained with blood, with white tips." Its chain of transmission is authentic up to Ibn al-Mukhtār, but it is muʿḍal, as Ibn al-Mukhtār is from the followers of the followers. The ḥāfiẓ mentioned it from the narration of Abū Hurayrah with this wording, except for the phrase "with white tips," and said: "It was recorded by al-Tirmidhī and al-Ḥākim with a chain according to the conditions of Muslim." I did not see it with them except with the wording mentioned above from Abū Hurayrah. And Allāh knows best. Then I saw it with al-Ḥākim (3/212) through the route of Ḥammād ibn Salamah from ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Mukhtār from Muḥammad ibn Sīrīn from Abū Hurayrah, raised with the wording: "Jaʿfar passed last night in the company of angels, his wings dyed with blood, with a white heart," and he said: "Authentic according to the conditions of Muslim," and al-Dhahabī agreed with him. And it is as they said. 5 - Ibn Saʿd recorded (2/129) through the route of Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Laylá from Sālim ibn Abī al-Jaʿd from Abū al-Yasar from Abū ʿĀmir, raised in a ḥadīth. Its men are trustworthy, except that Ibn Abī Laylá had poor memory, so his ḥadīth is good for supporting evidence. 6 - From al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib who said: When the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) was informed of Jaʿfar's death, it affected him, so Jibrīl came to him and said: "Indeed, Allāh has granted Jaʿfar two wings stained with blood with which he flies with the angels." Al-Ḥākim recorded it (3/40) through the route of ʿAmr ibn ʿAbd al-Ghaffār, who narrated to us from al-Aʿmash from ʿAdī ibn Thābit from al-Barāʾ, and he said: "This ḥadīth has routes from al-Barāʾ." Al-Dhahabī critiqued it, saying: "I say: all of them are weak from al-Barāʾ." I say: what has been presented is sufficient, and the defect in this is ʿAmr, as he is abandoned in ḥadīth.
