the awareness of the saints of the unseen, and all are mistaken. The story is authentic and established, and it is an honor with which Allāh honored ʿUmar, as he saved the Muslim army from capture or destruction. However, it does not contain what the Sufis claimed regarding knowledge of the unseen; rather, it is a matter of inspiration (in the terminology of the sharīʿah) or (telepathy) in the terminology of the present age, which is not infallible. It may be correct, as in this incident, or it may be wrong, as is often the case with humans. Therefore, every saint must adhere to the sharīʿah in all that he says or does to avoid falling into error, which would remove him from the sainthood that Allāh described comprehensively, saying: * "Indeed, the allies of Allāh will have no fear, nor will they grieve. Those who believed and were fearing Allāh." * (Yūnus, 62-63). And well did the one who said: If you see a person flying or walking on the surface of the sea, yet he does not adhere to the limits of the sharīʿah, then he is a deceiver and an innovator.
اطلاع الأولياء على الغيب، والكل مخطئ. فالقصة صحيحة ثابتة وهي كرامة أكرم الله بها عمر، حيث أنقذ به جيش المسلمين من الأسر أو الفتك به ولكن ليس فيها ما زعمه المتصوفة من الاطلاع على الغيب، وإنما هو من باب الإلهام (في عرف الشرع) أو (التخاطر) في عرف العصر الحاضر الذي ليس معصوما، فقد يصيب كما في هذه الحادثة وقد يخطئ كما هو الغالب على البشر، ولذلك كان لابد لكل ولي من التقيد بالشرع في كل ما يصدر منه من قول أو فعل خشية الوقوع في المخالفة، فيخرج بذلك عن الولاية التي وصفها الله تعالى بوصف جامع شامل فقال: * (ألا إن أولياء الله لا خوف عليهم ولا هم يحزنون. الذين آمنوا وكانوا يتقون) *. ولقد أحسن من قال: إذا رأيت شخصا قد يطير وفوق ماء البحر قد يسير ولم يقف على حدود الشرع فإنه مستدرج وبدعي.
- "The one I saw most resembling Gabriel was Dihyah al-Kalbī." It was recorded by Ibn Saʿd (4/250) from Ibn Shihāb who said: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: and he mentioned it. I say: Its isnād is authentic, except that it is mursal. Ibn Shihāb, who is al-Zuhrī, was a young tābiʿī. However, it has corroboration from the ḥadīth of Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Anṣārī, raised with the wording: "The prophets were presented to me..." the ḥadīth, and at its end, "and I saw Gabriel, and the one who most resembled him was Dihyah." It was recorded by Muslim (1/106), Aḥmad (3/334), and Ibn ʿAsākir (17/155/1) through the route of al-Layth from Abū al-Zubayr from him. Ibn Saʿd also recorded from Ibn ʿUmar who said: "Gabriel used to come to the Prophet ﷺ in the form of Dihyah al-Kalbī." Its isnād is authentic according to the criteria of Muslim, and Aḥmad recorded it (2/107) following another ḥadīth of Ibn ʿUmar about Gabriel coming to the Prophet ﷺ and asking him about Islām, īmān, and iḥsān
- " أشبه ما رأيت بجبرائيل دحية الكلبي ". أخرجه ابن سعد (٤ / ٢٥٠) عن ابن شهاب قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: فذكره. قلت: وإسناده صحيح إلا أنه مرسل، ابن شهاب وهو الزهري تابعي صغير. ولكن له شاهد من حديث جابر بن عبد الله الأنصاري مرفوعا بلفظ: " عرض علي الأنبياء... ". الحديث وفي آخره. " ورأيت جبريل، فإذا أقرب من رأيت به شبها دحية ". أخرجه مسلم (١ / ١٠٦) وأحمد (٣ / ٣٣٤) وابن عساكر (١٧ / ١٥٥ / ١) من طريق الليث عن أبي الزبير عنه. وأخرج ابن سعد أيضا عن ابن عمر قال: " كان جبريل يأتي النبي ﷺ في صورة دحية الكلبي ". وإسناده صحيح على شرط مسلم، وبه أخرجه أحمد (٢ / ١٠٧) عقب حديث ابن عمر الآخر في مجيء جبريل إلى النبي ﷺ، وسؤاله إياه عن الإسلام والإيمان والإحسان.
