and I have found a supporting narration for the ḥadīth of the chapter from Ibn ʿUmar, raised [to the Prophet], with the wording: "Omens are in women, houses, and horses." It was recorded by al-Ṭaḥāwī in "Sharḥ al-Maʿānī" (2/381) and al-Ṭabarānī in "al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr" (3/192/2) through various chains from Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar from ʿUtbah ibn Muslim from Ḥamzah ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar from his father. This isnād is authentic according to the criteria of Muslim, but it is anomalous in this abridged form, as it is contradicted by Sulaymān ibn Bilāl: ʿUtbah ibn Muslim narrated to me with the wording: "If there is bad omen in anything, it is in the horse..." the ḥadīth. It was recorded by Muslim (7/34) and al-Ṭaḥāwī. I said: They added at its beginning, "If there is bad omen in anything." This is an addition from a reliable source and must be accepted, especially since it has come through another route from Ibn ʿUmar in al-Bukhārī and has many supporting narrations, including from Sahl ibn Saʿd and Jābir, which I have previously documented (799). Among them is from Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ, raised [to the Prophet], with the wording: "There is no omen, but if there is omen in anything, it is in the woman..." It was recorded by al-Ṭaḥāwī through the route of Yaḥyá ibn Abī Kathīr from al-Ḥaḍramī ibn Lāḥiq that Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib narrated to him, saying: "I asked Saʿd about omens. He rebuked me (added in a narration: he said: Who told you? I hesitated to tell him) and said: I heard the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam)" and he mentioned it
