for when his deeds have ceased? He said: He mentioned it as a marfūʿ ḥadīth. The context is from Abū Ghurzah. Then it was also narrated through the chain of Layth: ʿUthmān narrated to me from Zādhān with it, except that "ʿAlīm" was omitted from its isnād. Al-Bukhārī also narrated it in "al-Tārīkh al-Kabīr" (4/1/80) as a muʿallaq ḥadīth from both paths. I said: Both are weak; Abū al-Yaqẓān, whose name is ʿUthmān ibn ʿUmayr, was described by al-Ḥāfiẓ as "weak, confused, and used to practice tadlīs." In the first of them is Sharīk, who is Ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Qāḍī, and in the other: Layth, who is Ibn Abī Sulaym, and both are weak. However, the ḥadīth is authentic, as it was narrated by al-Ṭabarānī and Ibn Shāhīn through the path of Mūsá al-Juhanī from Zādhān who said: "I was with a man from the Companions of the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) called ʿĀbis..." and he mentioned it similarly. It was also narrated by Abū Bakr ibn ʿAlī from this path in a similar manner as in "al-Iṣābah." It is supported by the ḥadīth of al-Nahhās ibn Qahm Abū al-Khaṭṭāb from Shaddād Abū ʿAmmār al-Shāmī who said: ʿAwf ibn Mālik said: "O plague, take me to you." They said: "Did you not hear the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) say: 'As long as a Muslim lives, it is better for him'?" He said: "Yes, but I fear six things..." and he mentioned them. It was narrated by Aḥmad (6/22, 23). And this al-Nahhās is weak. And the ḥadīth of Jamīl ibn ʿUbayd al-Ṭāʾī narrated to us by Abū al-Maʿlá (from al-Ḥasan) who said: al-Ḥakam ibn ʿAmr al-Ghifārī said: "O plague, take me to you," a ḥadīth similar to it. It was narrated by al-Ṭabarānī in "al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr" (1/324/1-2) and al-Ḥākim (3/443) with the addition, and both he and al-Dhahabī remained silent about it
