he is a trustworthy narrator from the ranks of the two Shaykhs, and al-Ḥāfiẓ said in the biography of al-Ṣanʿānī: "He is truthful but makes many mistakes." Ibn Abī Ḥātim said in "al-ʿIlal" (2/107): "I asked my father about a ḥadīth narrated by ʿAlī ibn Maymūn al-Raqī from Muḥammad ibn Kathīr from Sufyān (I said: he mentioned it, and he said:) My father said: This is a false ḥadīth, meaning with this isnād." Then Ibn ʿAdī said: "It has been narrated from Zāfir from Muḥammad ibn ʿUyainah, the brother of Sufyān ibn ʿUyainah, from Abū Ḥāzim from Sahl. It is also narrated from the ḥadīth of Zāfir from Muḥammad ibn ʿUyainah from Abū Ḥāzim from Ibn ʿUmar." I say: Zāfir, who is Ibn Sulaymān, is truthful but makes many errors, and similarly Muḥammad ibn ʿUyainah, for he is truthful but has errors as mentioned in "al-Taqrīb." One of them was confused in his isnād, sometimes making it from the Musnad of Sahl, and other times from the Musnad of Ibn ʿUmar. The first is more appropriate as it agrees with the previous corroborations. Moreover, I have found another route for it from Ibn ʿUmar. It was recorded by Ibn ʿAsākir in "Tārīkh Dimashq" (3/162/3) from Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn al-ʿAlas: Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Uways narrated to us from Mālik from Nāfiʿ from him. This isnād consists of narrators from the ranks of the two Shaykhs, except for this Ibn al-ʿAlas, whom I did not recognize. I have also found a supporting witness for it, mursal, with a good isnād, with the wording: "Renounce the world, and Allāh will love you; and as for people, discard this to them, and they will love you."
