hold on, I heard the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) say: so he mentioned it, so preserve that matter or neglect it." (He said: So he returned and had separated from her): It was recorded by al-Ṭaḥāwī in "Mushkil al-Āthār" (2/158) with this wording, and by Aḥmad (6/445) with this addition. Ibn ʿUyaynah followed him, saying: ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib narrated to us with a shortened version of the story. It was recorded by al-Ḥumaydī in "Musnad" (395) who said: Sufyān narrated it to us. And through al-Ḥumaydī's route, it was recorded by al-Ḥākim (4/152). It was also recorded by al-Tirmidhī (1/347) and Ibn Mājah (3663) through other routes from Sufyān. Al-Tirmidhī said: "A ḥadīth that is ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ." Ibn Ḥibbān (2023), al-Ḥākim (2/197), Aḥmad (5/198), and Ibn ʿAsākir (19/153/1-2) also recorded it through other routes from ʿAṭāʾ. Al-Ḥākim said: "Its isnād is ṣaḥīḥ." and al-Dhahabī agreed with him. (Note) The statement "so preserve that matter or neglect it" appears from the context to be the words of Abū al-Dardāʾ and not elevated [to the Prophet]. This is supported by the narration of ʿAbd al-Razzāq, who informed us that Sufyān narrated from ʿAṭāʾ, mentioning only the wording of the title. It was recorded by Aḥmad (6/447-448). However, in the earlier narration by al-Ṭaḥāwī, after the phrase: "or neglect it," it adds "or as the Prophet ﷺ said, the doubt is from Ibn Marzūq." I say: Despite the mentioned doubt, between him and Sufyān al-Thawrī is Abū Ḥudhayfah Mūsá ibn Masʿūd, who is known for poor memory as stated in "al-Taqrīb." And Allāh knows best.
