and its chain is authentic if Maimūn witnessed the incident, though I do not think so. 2 - As for the ḥadīth of Ibn ʿUmar, there are also multiple chains from him. The first: from ʿAṭāʾ ibn Abī Rabāḥ. "A man was praising another man in the presence of Ibn ʿUmar, so Ibn ʿUmar began to throw dirt towards his face and said: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said..." and he mentioned it with the wording of the translation. It was recorded by al-Bukhārī in "al-Adab al-Mufrad" (340) and al-Khaṭīb in "al-Tārīkh" (11/107). I say: Its chain is authentic according to the criteria of al-Bukhārī in his "Ṣaḥīḥ". The second: from Zayd ibn Aslam who said: I heard Ibn ʿUmar say: I heard the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) say, and he mentioned it with the wording: "Throw dirt in the faces of those who excessively praise." It was recorded by Ibn Ḥibbān (2008), Abū Nuʿaym in "al-Ḥilyah" (6/127), al-Khaṭīb (7/338), and Ibn ʿAsākir in "Tārīkh" (17/448/1) from various chains from him. I say: This chain is extremely authentic. The third: from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Jubayr ibn Nufayr who said: Praising your brother to his face is like passing a sharp razor over his throat - meaning intensely. He said: "A man praised Ibn ʿUmar (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu) to his face, and he said: I heard the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) (and he mentioned it with the aforementioned wording), then Ibn ʿUmar took dirt and threw it in the face of the praiser, saying: This is for your face (three times)."
