and another with fifteen, and another with ten. Each man gave according to what he had, until I had gathered three hundred saplings. The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said to me, "Go, Salmān, and dig holes for them. When you have finished, come to me, and I will place them with my own hand." So I dug the holes, and my companions helped me. When I finished, I went to him and informed him. The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) came out with me to the site. We brought the saplings to him, and the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) placed them with his own hand. By the One in whose hand is Salmān's soul, not a single sapling died. I fulfilled the obligation of the palm trees, but the debt of the money remained. Then a piece of gold the size of a hen's egg was brought to the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) from one of the expeditions. He said, "What happened to the Persian who is under contract?" He said: I was called for, and he said, "Take this and pay off what you owe, Salmān!" I said, "O Messenger of Allāh, how can this suffice for what I owe?" He said, "Take it, for Allāh, the Mighty and Majestic, will fulfill your debt with it." So I took it and weighed out from it—by the One in whose hand is Salmān's soul—forty ounces. I paid them their due and was freed. I then witnessed the Battle of the Trench with the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) and did not miss any event with him thereafter." It was recorded by Aḥmad (5/441-444) and Ibn Saʿd in "al-Ṭabaqāt" (4/53-57) through the route of Ibn Isḥāq, who said: ʿĀṣim ibn ʿUmar ibn Qatādah al-Anṣārī narrated to me from Maḥmūd ibn Labīd from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbbās. I said: This isnād is good. It was also mentioned by al-Haythamī in "al-Majmaʿ" (9/332-336), where he said: Aḥmad narrated all of it, and al-Ṭabarānī in "al-Kabīr" with a similar narration. Its narrators are those of the authentic collections except for Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq, who has explicitly stated hearing. I said: A portion of it was also narrated by al-Ḥākim (2/16) from this route, and he said: "Authentic according to the conditions of Muslim," and al-Dhahabī agreed with him. So he said! In another narration by Aḥmad (5/444) from Ibn Isḥāq as well, Yazīd ibn Abī Ḥabīb narrated to us from a man from Banī ʿAbd al-Qays from Salmān al-Khayr, who said..
