they approached him and said: What are you doing? He replied: You are harmed by me, but I need water. If they leave them to do what they want, they will all perish, but if they restrain them, they will be saved and all will be saved. Narrated by al-Bukhārī (2/111, 164), al-Tirmidhī (2/26), al-Bayhaqī (10/288), and Aḥmad (4/268, 270, 273) through the chain of Zakariyyā ibn Abī Zāʾidah and al-Aʿmash from al-Shaʿbī from al-Nuʿmān ibn Bashīr from the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) who said: and he mentioned it. Al-Tirmidhī said: "A good and authentic ḥadīth." Mujālid ibn Saʿīd also followed them in Aḥmad (4/273), and he is weak, and in his narration, there is an addition: "... like three who boarded a ship, and one of them had the lower and rougher part..." Others also followed them, as Ibn al-Mubārak said in "al-Zāhid" (p. 219/2): I am al-Ajlah from al-Shaʿbī with it, and his wording: "A group boarded a ship and divided it, each man getting a place. One of them took an axe and bored his place. They said: What are you doing? He said: It is my place, I do with it as I wish! If they restrain him, they will be saved and he will be saved, but if they leave him, he will drown and they will drown. So restrain your foolish ones before you perish." Ibn al-Mubārak also narrated it in "Ḥadīth" (vol. 2/107/2) and through him, Ibn Abī al-Dunyā in "al-Amr bi al-Maʿrūf" (p. 27/2).
