- "When you sit in every two rakʿahs, say: 'All greetings, prayers, and good things are for Allāh. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allāh and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allāh. I bear witness that there is no deity but Allāh and that Muḥammad is His servant and messenger.' Then choose the supplication that pleases you most." It was recorded by al-Nasāʾī (1/174), Aḥmad (1/437), and al-Ṭabarānī in "al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr" (3/55/1) through the route of Shuʿbah who said: Abū Isḥāq informed us, Abū al-Aḥwaṣ informed us from ʿAbd Allāh who said: "We did not know what to say in every two rakʿahs except to glorify, magnify, and praise our Lord, and Muḥammad (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) taught us the beginnings and ends of goodness, and he said: then he mentioned it." I say this is a sound isnād connected according to the criteria of Muslim. It was corroborated by Ibrāhīm ibn Yūsuf ibn Abī Isḥāq who narrated to me from his father from Abū Isḥāq who informed me from Abū al-Aḥwaṣ, al-Aswad ibn Yazīd, ʿAmr ibn Maymūn, and the companions of ʿAbd Allāh that they heard him say: then he mentioned it. It was recorded by al-Ṭabarānī: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal and Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥaḍramī said: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn Sālim al-Qazzāz informed us, Ibrāhīm informed us. I say: This isnād is good, its men are trustworthy, the men of the two Shaykhs except for al-Qazzāz, about whom the ḥāfiẓ said: "Trustworthy, though he sometimes contradicts." The ḥadīth contains an important benefit, which is the legitimacy of supplication in the first tashahhud. I have not seen any of the imams who said this except Ibn Ḥazm, and he is correct, even though he based it on generalities that opponents can refute with other specific texts. However, this ḥadīth is in itself a clear, explicit text that does not accept restriction. May Allāh have mercy on the one who is just and follows the sunnah
