- "Beware of oppression, for oppression will be darkness on the Day of Resurrection, and beware of greed, for greed destroyed those before you, leading them to shed each other's blood and violate their sacred matters." It was recorded by Muslim (8/18) and al-Bukhārī in "al-Adab al-Mufrad" (483) and Aḥmad (3/323) from Dāwūd ibn Qays, from ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Maqsim, from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh that the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said it, and he mentioned it. The first part of it was reported from the ḥadīth of ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar as a marfūʿ narration with the wording: "O people, beware of oppression, for it will be darkness on the Day of Resurrection." It was recorded by Aḥmad (2/92, 106, 136) through the route of ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib, from Muḥārib ibn Dithār, from Ibn ʿUmar with it. And this isnād has narrators who are trustworthy, the narrators of al-Bukhārī, but ʿAṭāʾ had mixed up [his narrations]. There is another route from him, abbreviated with the wording: "Oppression will be darkness on the Day of Resurrection." It was recorded by al-Bukhārī in "Ṣaḥīḥ" (3/113) and in "al-Adab al-Mufrad" (475), and by Muslim and Aḥmad (2/137, 146) from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Dīnār from him. It has a complete corroboration without the phrase "Beware of oppression" from the ḥadīth of ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ as a marfūʿ narration with the wording: "Oppression will be darkness on the Day of Resurrection, and beware of obscenity, for Allāh does not love obscenity or vulgarity, and beware of greed, for greed destroyed those before you, commanding them to sever ties, so they severed them."
