Adam ibn Abī Iyās al-ʿAsqalānī differed with them, saying: Muḥammad ibn Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Fudayk al-Madanī narrated to me from al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAṭiyyah al-Saʿdī from ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn al-Muṭṭalib ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ḥanṭab from his father from his grandfather ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ḥanṭab who said: "I was with the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) when he looked at Abū Bakr and ʿUmar and said" the ḥadīth. It was recorded by al-Ḥākim (3/69) who said: "Its isnād is authentic." Al-Dhahabī said: "I say: ḥasan." I say: Perhaps he means ḥasan due to other supporting narrations, otherwise I did not find a biography for al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAṭiyyah al-Saʿdī, but he has been followed up as will be mentioned. Ibn Abī Ḥātim said: "I asked my father about a ḥadīth narrated by Ibn Abī Fudayk who said that more than one person narrated to him from ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn al-Muṭṭalib with it." Ibn Mandah connected it through the route of Daḥīm from Ibn Abī Fudayk with it, as in "al-Iṣābah" by al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar, and he said: "And similarly it is with al-Baghawī, and he named among them ʿAmr ibn Abī ʿAmr and ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿUthmān, indicating that Ibn Abī Fudayk did not hear it from ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz. Aḥmad ibn Ṣāliḥ al-Miṣrī and others narrated it from Ibn Abī Fudayk in this manner and named the ambiguous ones as ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān and ʿAmr ibn Abī ʿAmr. Jaʿfar ibn Musāfir narrated it from Ibn Abī Fudayk saying: from al-Mughīrah ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān from al-Muṭṭalib ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ḥanṭab from his father from his grandfather who said: I heard the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), and he mentioned it. This is another variation, suggesting that the ḥadīth is from the narration of Ḥanṭab, the father of ʿAbd Allāh. It has been said regarding al-Muṭṭalib ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ḥanṭab: that he is al-Muṭṭalib ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Muṭṭalib ibn Ḥanṭab. If confirmed, then the companionship is for al-Muṭṭalib ibn Ḥanṭab.
