they will say: 'Yes.' He will say: 'How do you recognize Him when you have not seen Him?' They will say: 'There is nothing comparable to Him.' Then He will reveal Himself to us, smiling, and will say: 'Rejoice, O Muslims, for there is none among you except that I have placed a Jew or a Christian in his place in the Fire.' I said: This isnād is weak; I do not know this ʿUmārah, and the statement 'it appeared to Allāh' is objectionable. ʿAlī ibn Zayd, who is Ibn Judʿān, has weak memory, but the ḥadīth is authentic in general, as it has a corroborating narration from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh from the narration of Abū al-Zubayr, who heard Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh being asked about the crossing. He said: 'We will come on the Day of Judgment—about such and such, look at which is above the people. Then the nations will be called with their idols and what they used to worship, one after another. Then our Lord will come to us after that and say: "Whom are you waiting for?" They will say: "We are waiting for our Lord." He will say: "I am your Lord." They will say: "Until we look at You." Then He will reveal Himself to them, smiling...' the ḥadīth. It was recorded by Muslim (1/122) and Aḥmad (3/383), and he has another route (3/345) from Abū al-Zubayr with a similar elevated narration. I said: This indicates that Ibn Judʿān preserved the ḥadīth, and as for the rest of the ḥadīth with Aḥmad, he recorded it (4/391, 402, 410) and Muslim (8/104) from other routes from Abū Burdah with a similar narration. The ḥadīth has a corroborating narration from Abū Hurayrah in an elevated form with the wording: 'When Allāh gathers the first and the last on the Day of Judgment, the Lord will come to the believers, and He will stand over them, and the believers will be on a mound (they said to ʿUqbah: What is the mound? He said: A high place). He will say: "Do you recognize your Lord?" They will say: "If He reveals Himself to us, we will recognize Him." Then He will say to them a second time, and He will smile at them, and they will fall prostrate to Him.'
