that he would advise kindness to slaves and say: "Feed them from what you eat and clothe them from what you wear, and do not torture the creation of Allāh." It was recorded by al-Bukhārī in "al-Adab al-Mufrad" (29). Shuʿbah ibn Sulaymān said: Marwān ibn Muʿāwiyah narrated to us, saying: al-Faḍl ibn Mubashshir narrated to us, saying: I heard Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh say: and he mentioned it. This isnād is weak; al-Faḍl ibn Mubashshir is considered lenient as mentioned in "al-Taqrīb." I did not recognize Shuʿbah ibn Sulaymān, and I fear there might be a transcription error by the copyists. As for Marwān ibn Muʿāwiyah, he is a trustworthy ḥāfiẓ from the narrators of the six [canonical collections]. Then I saw that al-Bukhārī recorded it in another place (30-31), saying: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Maslamah narrated to us, saying: Marwān ibn Muʿāwiyah narrated it.

"I advise you to be as shy before Allāh as you would be before a righteous man from your people." It was recorded by Aḥmad in "al-Zuhd" (p. 46), Abū ʿArūbah al-Ḥarrānī in "al-Ṭabaqāt" (2/10/1 - selected from it), al-Sulamī in "Ādāb al-Ṣuḥbah" (12/1), al-Bayhaqī in "al-Shuʿab" (2/462/2), and al-Kharāʾiṭī in "Makārim al-Akhlāq" (p. 50) through two chains from al-Layth ibn Saʿd from Yazīd ibn Abī Ḥabīb from Abū al-Khayr Marthad who heard Saʿīd ibn Yazīd al-Anṣārī: "A man said: O Messenger of Allāh, advise me. He said: and he mentioned it." I said: This isnād is good; all its narrators are trustworthy, except for a disagreement regarding the companionship of Saʿīd ibn Yazīd, who is Ibn al-Azwar. Abū al-Khayr affirmed it for him as mentioned in some paths of this ḥadīth, and he is more knowledgeable about it than others. Al-Munāwī said in "al-Fayḍ": "al-Dhahabī said: Abū al-Khayr al-Yaznī narrated from him and claimed he had companionship. End." He said: I said to the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam): Advise me. And he mentioned it. Al-Haythamī said: Its narrators were deemed trustworthy despite some weakness among them."
