- "Use antimony when going to sleep, for it clears the vision and promotes hair growth." It was recorded by Ibn Mājah (3496) and al-Qāḍī al-Khulʿī in "al-Fawāʾid" (20/50/1) through the route of Ismāʿīl ibn Muslim al-Makkī from Muḥammad ibn al-Munkadir from Jābir who said: I heard the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) say it, and he mentioned it. I say: This Ismāʿīl is weak, but he was not alone in narrating it, as Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq followed him from Muḥammad ibn al-Munkadir with it. It was recorded by al-Mukhliṣ in "al-Fawāʾid al-Muntaqāh" (9/4/2) and al-Baghawī in "Sharḥ al-Sunnah" (3/357). However, Ibn Isḥāq is a mudallis, and he narrated it with ʿanʿanah. Yet he was not alone in narrating it, as it was recorded by al-Mukhliṣ and Ibn ʿAdī in "al-Kāmil" (143/2) through the route of Ziyād ibn al-Rabīʿ who said: Hishām ibn Ḥassān narrated to us from Muḥammad ibn al-Munkadir with it. I say: This isnād is authentic according to the criteria of al-Bukhārī. It has been criticized with something that does not undermine it, as Ibn Abī Ḥātim mentioned it in "al-ʿIlal" (2/260) from this route, and he asked his father about it, who replied: "A rejected ḥadīth, narrated only by al-Ṣaʿqal (!) Ismāʿīl ibn Muslim and the like, and perhaps Hishām ibn Ḥassān took it from Ismāʿīl ibn Muslim, for he used to practice tadlīs." I say: I have not seen anyone accuse him of tadlīs in general, but they spoke about his narration from al-Ḥasan and ʿAṭāʾ specifically because he used to send [narrations] from them, as Abū Dāwūd said, and therefore al-Ḥāfiẓ said: "Trustworthy, one of the most reliable people in [narrating from] Ibn Sīrīn, but his narration from al-Ḥasan and ʿAṭāʾ is questionable, because it was said: he used to send [narrations] from them."
