"When you circumcise, do not cut severely, for it is more pleasing to the face and more favorable to the husband." Narrated by al-Dūlābī (2/122) and al-Khaṭīb in "al-Tārīkh" (5/327) from Muḥammad ibn Salām al-Jumaḥī, the client of Qudāmah ibn Maẓʿūn, who said: Zāʾidah ibn Abī al-Raqād Abū Muʿādh narrated to us from Thābit from Anas ibn Mālik who said: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said to Umm ʿAṭiyyah: and he mentioned it. I said: This isnād is weak; its men are trustworthy except for Zāʾidah ibn Abī al-Raqād, for he is considered unreliable in ḥadīth as the ḥāfiẓ said in "al-Taqrīb". As for the statement of al-Haythamī in "Majmaʿ al-Zawāʾid" (5/172): "It was narrated by al-Ṭabarānī in 'al-Awsaṭ' and its isnād is ḥasan." If it is from a different route, it is possible, but if it is from this one, then no, and I do not see it except from this route, for I have seen Ibn ʿAdī narrate it in "al-Kāmil" (150/2) and he said: "This is narrated from Thābit by Zāʾidah ibn Abī al-Raqād, and I do not know anyone else who narrates it, and Zāʾidah has good ḥadīths, but some of his ḥadīths are rejected." I said: And al-Khaṭīb narrated from al-Qawārīrī that he rejected this ḥadīth. I said: But there is another route for the ḥadīth from Anas, narrated by Abū Nuʿaym in "Akhbār Aṣbahān" (1/245) from Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Umayyah who said: Abū Hilāl al-Rāsibī narrated to us: I heard al-Ḥasan: Anas narrated to us saying: "There was a female circumciser in Medina called Umm Ayman, and the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said to her..." and he mentioned it.
