fourth: when the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) visited the Jewish boy, he said to him: "Accept Islam" ... the ḥadīth, and he did not initiate with the greeting of peace. This is an authentic ḥadīth narrated by al-Bukhārī and others, and it is referenced in "al-Irwāʾ" (1272). So if the prohibited initiation was only when meeting him on the road, he (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) would have initiated with the greeting of peace because he was not on the road, as is apparent. And similarly. fifth: when the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) came to his uncle Abū Ṭālib during his illness before death, he also did not initiate with the greeting of peace, but rather said to him: "O uncle, say there is no deity but Allāh" ... the ḥadīth, recorded by the two Shaykhs and others, and it is referenced in "al-Irwāʾ" (1273). Thus, it is established from these narrations that initiating the People of the Book with the greeting of peace is not permissible at all, whether on the road, at home, or elsewhere. If it is said: Is it permissible to initiate with something other than the greeting of peace, such as saying: How are you this morning or evening, or how is your condition and the like? I say: What appears to me, and Allāh knows best, is that it is permissible, because the prohibition mentioned in the ḥadīth is specifically about the greeting of peace, which, when mentioned unconditionally, refers to the Islamic greeting of peace that includes the name of Allāh, as in his (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) saying: "Peace is a name from the names of Allāh which He placed on earth, so spread it among them." This is narrated by al-Bukhārī in "al-Adab al-Mufrad" (989) and will appear (1894). Supporting what I mentioned is the statement of ʿAlqamah: "Indeed, ʿAbd Allāh (meaning Ibn Masʿūd) greeted the village chiefs with a gesture." This is narrated by al-Bukhārī (1104), who titled it: "Whoever greeted a dhimmī with a gesture." Its chain is authentic
