his camel, and he crossed the ford with it. Abū ʿUbaydah said, "O Commander of the Faithful, are you doing this?! You remove your sandals, place them on your shoulder, take the reins of your camel, and cross the ford with it?! I would not want the people of the town to see you!" ʿUmar replied, "Oh, if anyone other than you had said this, Abū ʿUbaydah, I would have made him an example for the Ummah of Muḥammad (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam)! We were the most humiliated of people, and Allāh honored us with Islam. So whenever we seek honor through anything other than what Allāh honored us with, Allāh will humiliate us." Al-Ḥākim said, "Authentic according to the criteria of al-Shaykhayn." Al-Dhahabī agreed with him, and it is as they said. In another narration, "O Commander of the Faithful, the troops and the Byzantine leaders will meet you while you are in this state? ʿUmar replied, "We are a people whom Allāh honored with Islam, and we will not seek honor through anything else." (al-ẓilāl): It is everything that provides shade for you; its singular is ẓillah, intended to mean like mountains and clouds.

- "Indeed, Allāh does not accept any deed except that which is done sincerely for Him and seeking His face." Its cause, as narrated by Abū Umāmah (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu), is that he said: "A man came to the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) and said: 'What do you think of a man who fights seeking reward and recognition, what does he have?' The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: 'He has nothing,' and he repeated it three times, with the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) saying: 'He has nothing.' Then he said... " and he mentioned it. It was narrated by al-Nasāʾī in "Jihād" (2/59), and its chain is good as stated by al-Ḥāfiẓ al-ʿIrāqī in "Takhrīj al-Iḥyāʾ" (4/328). There are many ḥadīths with the same meaning, which you can find at the beginning of the book "al-Targhīb" by al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Mundhirī
