It was recorded by Ibn Saʿd in "al-Ṭabaqāt" (1/239-240): Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar informed us, saying: Maʿmar ibn Rāshid narrated to me from him, he said: and he mentioned it in the midst of a long ḥadīth about the building of the mosque. I said: This isnād is very weak. Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar is al-Wāqidī, who is abandoned, so it is not suitable for supporting evidence or follow-ups. 4 - from Rāshid ibn Saʿd. Al-Mufaḍḍal al-Jundī said in "Kitāb Faḍl al-Madīnah" (no. 47 - my manuscript): Ibn Abī ʿUmar and Saʿīd narrated to us, they said: Sufyān narrated to us from Thawr ibn Yazīd from him, he said: "The Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) sent ʿAbd Allāh ibn Rawāḥah and some of his companions with a reed or a stick, and they were measuring the mosque with it. ʿAbd Allāh ibn Rawāḥah said: O Messenger of Allāh, if only we built our mosque like the mosque of Shām. So the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) took the stick or the reed and shook it - meaning he threw it - and said: 'Wooden beams and thatch, and your shelter is like the shelter of Mūsá, and the matter is more urgent than that.'" I said: This isnād is also mursal but authentic, all its narrators are trustworthy. It has been narrated in a connected form, which is: 5 - from Abū al-Dardāʾ.
