I said: He is weak, and as for al-Haythamī's statement in "al-Majmaʿ" (4/255): "It was narrated by al-Ṭabarānī in 'al-Kabīr' and 'al-Ṣaghīr' and its narrators are those of the authentic collections," it is either an error or leniency on his part. For this Nuʿaym—who was the only one who narrated it—was only mentioned by al-Bukhārī in a suspended form and by Muslim in the introduction to his "Ṣaḥīḥ." Therefore, it should not be attributed to them without qualification, as it gives the impression that it is relied upon by them! And his statement "the daughter of al-Barāʾ..." is likely a typographical error, and the correct version is: "the wife of al-Barāʾ," for two reasons: the first is that it appears that way in "al-Majmaʿ" with the wording: "from Umm Mubashshir that the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) proposed to the wife of al-Barāʾ ibn Maʿrūr..." and it seems that this context is from al-Ṭabarānī's "al-Kabīr." The second reason is that I found a strong, detailed corroborating report for the ḥadīth, and therefore I included it in this book. Otherwise, Nuʿaym belongs in the other book. Al-Bukhārī said in "al-Tārīkh al-Kabīr" (4/2/285): al-Juʿfī told us, Zayd ibn al-Ḥabbāb informed us, saying: Yaḥyā ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Qatādah informed us from Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Khallād al-Anṣārī from Umm Mubashshir al-Anṣārīyah from the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), who said to her while she was in one of her states—and she was the wife of al-Barāʾ ibn Maʿrūr who had passed away—he said: "Zayd ibn Ḥārithah's family has died, and I will not fail to choose a wife for him. I have chosen you for him." She said: "O Messenger of Allāh, I have sworn to al-Barāʾ that I will not marry another man after him." The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: "Do you not prefer him?" She said: "Would I prefer him when Allāh has placed him in a position with you? It is only jealousy." She said: "The matter is up to you." He said: "So he married her to Zayd ibn Ḥārithah and moved her to his wives. The she-camels would come, and he would milk them and give her the milk to drink, then give it to whoever he wanted from his wives." She said: "He entered upon me while I was with ʿĀʾishah, and he placed his hand on her knee and whispered something to her without me, so she gestured with her hand on the chest of the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam)."
