Abū Dāwūd and Ibn Khuzaymah: the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) led us in prayer one day, and during some part of his prayer, he removed his sandals and placed them to his left. When the people saw this, they removed their sandals. After he finished his prayer, he said: "What made you throw away your sandals?" They said: "We saw you remove your sandals, so we removed ours." He said: "Indeed, Jibrīl came to me and informed me that there was some impurity on them—or he said: some harm (in another narration: filth)—so I removed them. If one of you comes to the mosque, let him look at his sandals, and if he sees any impurity—or he said: harm (in the other narration: filth)—let him wipe them and pray in them." (Abū Dāwūd, al-Nasāʾī, and Ibn Khuzaymah). And when he removed them, he placed them to his left, and he used to say: Abū Dāwūd and Ibn Khuzaymah: "If one of you prays, let him not place his sandals on his right or his left, lest they be on the right of someone else, unless there is no one on his left, and let him place them between his feet." The prayer on the pulpit
