(Ibn Khuzaymah, al-Bayhaqī, and al-Ḍiyāʾ in "al-Mukhtārah") regarding his saying to his left: "Peace be upon you." and sometimes he would give one salutation: ["Peace be upon you"] [facing forward, slightly inclining to the right side] [or a little] (Muslim, Abū ʿAwānah, al-Sirāj, Ibn Khuzaymah, and al-Ṭabarānī). and they used to gesture with their hands when they greeted to the right and to the left, and the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) saw them and said: "What is the matter with you gesturing with your hands as if they are the tails of restless horses? When one of you gives salutation, let him turn to his companion and not gesture with his hand." [When they prayed with him again, they did not do that]. (In another narration: It suffices one of you to place his hand on his thigh and then greet his brother on his right and left) the obligation of salutation (authenticated by al-Ḥākim and al-Dhahabī). and he (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) used to say: "...and its conclusion (meaning: the prayer) is the salutation."
(ابن خزيمة والبيهقي والضياء في (المختارة) (على قوله عن يساره: (السلام عليكم). وأحيانا (كان يسلم تسليمة واحدة: [ (السلام عليكم) ] [تلقاء وجهه يميل إلى الشق الأيمن شيئا] [أو قليلا] )(مسلم وأبو عوانة والسراج وابن خزيمة والطبراني). و (كانوا يشيرون بأيديهم إذا سلموا عن اليمين وعن الشمال فرآهم رسول الله ﷺ فقال:(ما شأنكم تشيرون بأيديكم كأنها أذناب خيل شمس إذا سلم أحدكم فليلتفت إلى صاحبه ولا يومئ بيده) [فلما صلوا معه أيضا لم يفعلوا ذلك]. (وفي رواية: إنما يكفي أحدكم أن يضع يده على فخذه ثم يسلم على أخيه من على يمينه وشماله) وجوب السلام (صححه الحاكم والذهبي). وكان ﷺ يقول: (. . . وتحليلها (يعني: الصلاة) التسليم).
