from him (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) just as he did not say upon mentioning him (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam): (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), and his ummah is encouraged to say that every time he is mentioned because we say: if that were preferable, it would have been transmitted from the Companions and then from the Followers. We have not found in any of the reports from any of the Companions or their Followers that they said that, despite the abundance of what has been transmitted from them on this matter. And this is Imām al-Shāfiʿī—may Allāh elevate his rank—who is among the people who most revered the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam). He said in the introduction of his book, which is the main reference for the people of his school: "O Allāh, bless Muḥammad" to the end of what his ijtihād led him to, which is his saying: "whenever he is remembered by those who remember and whenever he is forgotten by those who forget." It is as if he derived this from the authentic ḥadīth in which it is mentioned: "Glory be to Allāh as many as His creation," for it is established that he (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said to the Mother of the Believers—and he saw her frequently engaging in tasbīḥ and prolonging it—: "I have said after you words which, if weighed against what you have said, would outweigh them," and he mentioned that. The Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) liked comprehensive supplications, and Qāḍī ʿIyāḍ dedicated a chapter on the description of sending prayers upon the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) in his book "al-Shifāʾ," and he transmitted therein elevated reports from a group of Companions and Followers, none of which contain from any of the Companions or others the phrase: "our master." Among them is the ḥadīth of ʿAlī that he used to teach them how to send prayers upon the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) by saying: "O Allāh, Originator of the heavens and the earth, Creator of the elevated heavens, place the foremost of Your prayers and the most abundant of Your blessings and the highest of Your greetings upon Muḥammad, Your servant and Messenger, the opener of what was closed." And from ʿAlī that he used to say: "The prayers of Allāh, the Most Merciful, the angels who are near, the prophets, the truthful, the martyrs, the righteous, and whatever glorifies You, O Lord of the worlds, be upon Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh, the Seal of the Prophets and the Leader of the God-fearing." the ḥadīth and from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd that he used to say: "O Allāh, place Your prayers."
