Ibn Mughaffal would modulate his recitation like this (ā ā ā), and he would instruct to beautify the voice with the Qurʾān, saying: (as al-Bukhārī mentioned in a suspended form) "Adorn the Qurʾān with your voices [for a good voice enhances the beauty of the Qurʾān]" (authentic). And he would say: "Among the best of people in voice with the Qurʾān is the one whom, when you hear him recite, you think he fears Allāh." He would also instruct to chant the Qurʾān, saying: (as narrated by al-Dārimī and Aḥmad with an authentic chain) "Learn the Book of Allāh, maintain it, acquire it, and chant it, for by the One in whose hand is my soul, it is more intense than childbirth in the mind" (as narrated by Abū Dāwūd, authenticated by al-Ḥākim, and agreed upon by al-Dhahabī). And he would say: "He is not one of us who does not chant the Qurʾān."
