that Ibn Khabbāb ibn al-Aratt—who had witnessed Badr with the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam)—observed the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) praying the entire night (in one narration: on a night he prayed all of it) until it was with the dawn. When he completed his prayer, Khabbāb said to him: "O Messenger of Allāh, may my father and mother be sacrificed for you, you prayed tonight a prayer the like of which I have not seen you pray before." He said: "Indeed, it is a prayer of hope and fear [and I] asked my Lord for three things; He granted me two and withheld one: I asked my Lord not to destroy us with what He destroyed the nations before us (in one narration: not to destroy my nation by famine), and He granted me that. I asked my Lord not to let an enemy from outside overpower us, and He granted me that. I asked my Lord not to divide us into factions, and He withheld that from me." (al-Nasāʾī and Ibn Khuzaymah, authenticated by al-Ḥākim and agreed upon by al-Dhahabī). and (he stood a night with a verse, repeating it until morning, which is: "If You punish them, indeed they are Your servants; but if You forgive them, indeed it is You who is the Exalted in Might, the Wise." (Sūrah al-Māʾidah, 5:118) [with it he would bow, with it he would prostrate, and with it he would supplicate] [When morning came, Abū Dharr (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu) said to him: "O Messenger of Allāh, you have continued to recite this verse until morning, bowing with it, prostrating with it] [and supplicating with it] [while Allāh has taught you the entire Quran] [if one of us were to do this, we would find it burdensome] [He said: "I asked my Lord for intercession for my nation, and He granted it to me, and it will reach, if Allāh wills, those who do not associate anything with Allāh.")
