a mighty plot. And they said, 'Do not abandon your gods; do not abandon Wadd, nor Suwāʿ, nor Yaghūth, and Yaʿūq, and Nasr.' They were righteous people from the descendants of Adam, and they had followers who emulated them. When they died, their followers said, 'If we create images of them, it will remind us more of worship when we remember them.' So they made images of them. When those followers died and others came after them, Satan whispered to them, saying, 'They only worshiped them, and through them, they received rain.' So they worshiped them, and later the Arabs worshiped them as well. This meaning is narrated in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī from Ibn ʿAbbās (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu). Some of the early generations said, "These were righteous people from the people of Noah. When they died, they remained at their graves and then made statues of them. As time passed, they worshiped them." This is supported by what is established in the two Ṣaḥīḥs and others from ʿĀʾishah (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhā): "Umm Salamah (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhā) mentioned to the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) a church she saw in the land of Abyssinia and what she saw in it of images. The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: 'They are people who, when a righteous servant or a righteous man among them died, they built a mosque over his grave and made those images in it. They are the worst of creation in the sight of Allāh.'" Ibn Jarīr narrated in his exegesis of the verse: 'Have you then considered al-Lāt and al-ʿUzzā?' He said, "He used to prepare sūwīq for the pilgrims, then he died, so they remained at his grave." In Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, from Jundub ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Bajalī (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu), he said: I heard the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) before he died saying: "Indeed, those who came before you used to take the graves of their prophets as mosques. Beware, do not take graves as mosques, for I forbid you from that." In the two Ṣaḥīḥs, from the ḥadīth of ʿĀʾishah (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhā), she said: "When the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) was afflicted with his illness, he would cover his face with a cloak. When he was distressed, he would uncover it and say, while in that state: 'May Allāh curse the Jews and the Christians, for they took the graves of their prophets as mosques'—warning against what they did."
