[The Ten Nullifiers of Islam]
The first of the ten nullifiers: associating partners in the worship of Allāh, the Exalted. Allāh, the Exalted, said: "Indeed, Allāh does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills" (Sūrah al-Nisāʾ, 4:48). And He said: "Indeed, he who associates others with Allāh—Allāh has forbidden him Paradise, and his refuge is the Fire. And there are not for the wrongdoers any helpers" (Sūrah al-Māʾidah, 5:72). This includes invoking the dead, seeking their aid, making vows to them, and sacrificing for them. The second: whoever places intermediaries between himself and Allāh, calling upon them, asking them for intercession, and relying on them, has committed disbelief by consensus. The third: whoever does not declare the polytheists to be disbelievers, or doubts their disbelief, or approves of their beliefs, has committed disbelief. The fourth: whoever believes that guidance other than that of the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) is more complete than his guidance, or that a judgment other than his is better than his judgment, such as those who prefer the judgment of tyrants over his judgment, is a disbeliever. The fifth: whoever hates something that the Messenger (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) brought, even if he acts upon it, has committed disbelief; due to His saying: "That is because they disliked what Allāh revealed, so He rendered worthless their deeds" (Sūrah Muḥammad, 47:9). The sixth: whoever mocks anything from the religion of the Messenger (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), or its reward or punishment, has committed disbelief. The evidence is His saying: "Say, 'Is it Allāh and His verses and His Messenger that you were mocking?' - Make no excuse; you have disbelieved after your belief" (Sūrah al-Tawbah, 9:65-66). The seventh: magic, including diversion and attraction. Whoever practices it or is pleased with it has committed disbelief. The evidence is His saying: "But they do not teach anyone unless they say, 'We are a trial, so do not disbelieve'" (Sūrah al-Baqarah, 2:102). The eighth: supporting the polytheists and aiding them against the Muslims. The evidence is His saying: "And whoever is an ally to them among you—then indeed, he is [one] of them. Indeed, Allāh guides not the wrongdoing people" (Sūrah al-Māʾidah, 5:51). The ninth: whoever believes that some people are allowed to deviate from the law of Muḥammad (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) is a disbeliever; due to His saying: "And whoever desires other than Islam as religion—never will it be accepted from him, and he, in the Hereafter, will be among the losers" (Sūrah Āl ʿImrān, 3:85). The tenth: turning away from the religion of Allāh, not learning it or acting upon it. The evidence is His saying: "And who is more unjust than one who is reminded of the verses of his Lord; then he turns away from them? Indeed, We will take retribution from the criminals" (Sūrah al-Sajdah, 32:22). There is no difference in all these nullifiers between one who is joking, serious, or afraid, except for the one who is coerced. All of them are among the gravest dangers and most frequent occurrences. Therefore, a Muslim should be cautious of them and fear them for himself. We seek refuge in Allāh from the causes of His wrath and His painful punishment. May Allāh send blessings upon the best of His creation, Muḥammad, and his family and companions. His words have ended, may Allāh have mercy on him. Included in the fourth category: whoever believes that the systems and laws enacted by people are better than the Islamic law, or that they are equal to it, or that it is permissible to refer to them for judgment, even if he believes that judgment by the sharīʿah is better, or that the Islamic system is not suitable for application in the twentieth century, or that it was the cause of the Muslims' backwardness, or that it is confined to the relationship between a person and his Lord without interfering in other aspects of life. Also included in the fourth: whoever sees that implementing Allāh's judgment in cutting off the hand of the thief or stoning the adulterer who is married does not suit the present age. Also included in this: anyone who believes it is permissible to judge by other than the sharīʿah of Allāh in transactions or punishments or other matters, even if he does not believe that it is better than the judgment of the sharīʿah; because by doing so, he has permitted what Allāh has forbidden by consensus. Anyone who permits what Allāh has forbidden, which is known from the religion by necessity, such as adultery, alcohol, usury, and judging by other than the sharīʿah of Allāh, is a disbeliever by the consensus of the Muslims. We ask Allāh to guide us all to what pleases Him and to guide us and all Muslims to His straight path. Indeed, He is Hearing and Near. May Allāh send blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muḥammad and his family and companions.
