by itself, otherwise it would not be beneficial. The sharīʿah only prescribes from the remembrances that which is beneficial by itself, not what requires something else to be beneficial. Some who persist in this form of remembrance have fallen into various forms of heresy and types of union, as has been detailed elsewhere. As for what is mentioned about some shaykhs saying, "I fear that I might die between negation and affirmation," this is a state in which one should not emulate its possessor. For in that there is an obvious error, as if a servant were to die in this state, they would die only upon what they intended and aimed for, as deeds are judged by intentions. It has been established that the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) commanded the deceased to be prompted with: "There is no deity but Allāh," and said: "Whoever's last words are: 'There is no deity but Allāh' will enter Paradise." If what was mentioned were a concern, the deceased would not be prompted with a phrase feared to cause an unfavorable death during its utterance. Instead, the chosen remembrance would be the singular name. The remembrance with the singular, implicit name is further from the sunnah, more inclined towards innovation, and closer to the misguidance of Satan. For whoever says: "O He, O..
بِنَفسِهِ وَإِلَّا لم يكن فِيهِ فَائِدَة والشريعة إِنَّمَا تشرع من الْأَذْكَار مَا يُفِيد بِنَفسِهِ لَا مَا تكون الْفَائِدَة حَاصِلَة بِغَيْرِهِ. وَقد وَقع بعض من واظب على هَذَا الذّكر فِي فنون من الْإِلْحَاد وأنواع من الِاتِّحَاد كَمَا قد بسط فِي غير هَذَا الْمَوْضُوع. وَمَا يذكر عَن بعض الشُّيُوخ من أَنه قَالَ: أَخَاف أَن أَمُوت بَين النَّفْي وَالْإِثْبَات، حَال لَا يقْتَدى فِيهَا بصاحبها. فَإِن فِي ذَلِك من الْغَلَط مَا لَا خَفَاء بِهِ إِذْ لَو مَاتَ العَبْد فِي هَذِه الْحَال لم يمت إِلَّا على مَا قَصده ونواه إِذْ الْأَعْمَال بِالنِّيَّاتِ. وَقد ثَبت أَن النَّبِي ﷺ أَمر يتلقين الْمَيِّت: " لَا إِلَه إِلَّا الله " وَقَالَ: " من كَانَ آخر كَلَامه: لَا إِلَه إِلَّا الله دخل الْجنَّة ". وَلَو كَانَ مَا ذكره محذورا لم يلقن الْمَيِّت كلمة يخَاف أَن يَمُوت فِي أَثْنَائِهَا موتا غير مَحْمُود بل كَانَ يلقن مَا اخْتَارَهُ من ذكر الِاسْم الْمُفْرد. وَالذكر بِالِاسْمِ الْمُضمر الْمُفْرد أبعد عَن السّنة وَأدْخل فِي الْبِدْعَة وَأقرب إِلَى ضلال الشَّيْطَان فَإِن من قَالَ: يَا هُوَ يَا
