the servant's love for his Lord is perfected, and the Lord's love for His servant is perfected, and to the extent that this is deficient, that is deficient. And whenever there is love in the heart for other than Allāh, there is servitude in it to other than Allāh to that extent. And whenever there is servitude in it to other than Allāh, there is love in it for other than Allāh to that extent. And any love that is not for Allāh is false, and any action not intended for the sake of Allāh is false. For "the world is cursed, and what is in it is cursed except what is for Allāh," and nothing is for Allāh except what Allāh and His Messenger love, and that is what is prescribed. So every action intended for other than Allāh is not for Allāh, and every action that does not conform to the sharīʿah of Allāh is not for Allāh. Rather, nothing is for Allāh except what combines the two descriptions: that it is for Allāh and that it conforms to the love of Allāh and His Messenger, and it is what is obligatory and recommended, as He, the Exalted, said (Sūrah al-Kahf, 110): "So whoever hopes for the meeting with his Lord, let him do righteous work and not associate anyone in the worship of his Lord." Thus, there must be righteous work, which is obligatory and recommended, and it must be sincere for the sake of Allāh, the Exalted, as He, the Exalted, said (Sūrah al-Baqarah, 112): "Yes, whoever submits his face to Allāh while being a doer of good will have his reward with his Lord, and there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve." And the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: "Whoever does an action that is not in accordance with our matter, it is rejected." And he (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: "Indeed..
